Frederick “Fred” Whitcroft was an influential Canadian amateur and early professional ice hockey player and coach. Known for his scoring prowess, he played for several major pre-NHL teams during the professional era’s infancy (1906–1910). With the Kenora Thistles, he was part of the team that successfully defended the Stanley Cup in 1907.
He led the Alberta Professional Hockey League (APHL) in goals scored for two consecutive years while playing for the Edmonton Eskimos and was an offensive leader for the legendary Renfrew Creamery Kings (the “Millionaires”), where he played alongside Hall of Famers like Frank Patrick, Lester Patrick, and Cyclone Taylor. Whitcroft retired from playing in 1910 and was later inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1963 as a player.
