The 1912–13 NHA season marked the permanent return of seven-man hockey to the league, despite a brief, ultimately reversed attempt to continue with six players. This season saw the NHA expand back to six teams with the highly anticipated debut of two new Toronto franchises, the Toronto Hockey Club (Blueshirts) and the Toronto Tecumsehs (Indians), after the Arena Gardens finally opened. The reigning champions, the Quebec Bulldogs, dominated the regular season, finishing first with a 16–4–0 record to capture their second consecutive league championship and the O’Brien Cup. Their offense was historically potent, led by star player Joe Malone, who had a phenomenal season and topped the league’s scoring with 43 goals. Following the season, the league decided that all future Stanley Cup challenges would be played only after the regular season concluded.

As the NHA champions and Stanley Cup holders, the Quebec Bulldogs successfully defended the Cup in one challenge series against the Sydney Millionaires of the Maritime Professional Hockey League. Quebec won the two-game, total-goals series with a decisive 20–5 score, highlighted by Joe Malone’s spectacular performance where he scored 9 goals in the first game alone. The season was also notable for the Montreal Canadiens permanently adopting a new jersey design, switching from a “barber pole” style to a solid red jersey with a wide blue chest stripe and a ‘C’ logo, a look that forms the basis of their uniform to this day. Following the Stanley Cup challenge, Quebec traveled west to play an exhibition series against the Victoria Senators of the PCHA, though they refused to defend the Cup on any ice other than their home rink.
