The 1915–16 NHA season was the league’s seventh and was played with five teams following the Toronto Blueshirts absorbing players from the defunct Shamrocks/Ontarios franchise. This marked a period of ongoing rivalry and player movement with the Western-based PCHA, which continued to “raid” NHA players. On the administrative side, the league’s president instituted a new policy requiring officials to be locked in their dressing rooms between periods to prevent outside influence. The Montreal Canadiens had a stellar season, finishing atop the standings with a 16–7–1 record, which earned them the O’Brien Cup as league champions. The scoring race was led by the Canadiens’ Didier Pitre, who amassed 39 points (24 goals, 15 assists), though his teammate Newsy Lalonde led the league outright with 28 goals.

As NHA champions, the Montreal Canadiens advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals to play the Portland Rosebuds of the PCHA. This was a historic contest, as Portland became the first American-based team to ever challenge for the Cup. Hosted in Montreal, the best-of-five series was closely fought, with the Canadiens prevailing three games to two to capture their first-ever Stanley Cup championship. The season also featured other notable events, including a record-breaking overtime game on January 13, where the Quebec Bulldogs defeated the Canadiens after 50 minutes and 28 seconds of extra time, as well as a memorable on-ice brawl in Toronto that resulted in a player arrest.
