Larry GIlmour played hockey on a number of amateur and professional teams from 1898 up until 1911. In 1907 he joined the Renfrew Creamery Kings, and was part of a disputed FAHL game that turned violent between Brockville and Ottawa, where Brockville hired the Kings to play on their behalf.

When the Creamery Kings disbanded in 1911, Gilmour moved on to coaching in the Renfrew area. He had been assigned to play for the Montreal Canadiens, and elected to retire.
