Walter Smaill was a Canadian professional hockey player who spent time playing in the National Hockey Association (NHA), Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association (ECHA), and Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA).
Smaill typically played Left Wing but was often utilized as an offensive defenseman (“cover-point”) due to his strong rushing ability. His most significant accomplishments were winning the Stanley Cup twice with the Montreal Wanderers in 1907 and 1908. Smaill was also famously nicknamed the “Stitch Champion of Hockey” because of his badly battered face, a testament to his physical playing style and frequent injuries sustained throughout his career.
